Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Miami and throughout Florida

Internal Family Systems therapy views your mind as a community of parts, each with its own feelings, beliefs, and role. Some parts protect you by staying in control. Others react quickly to put out emotional fires. Still others carry old pain from experiences you may have tucked away. Beneath them all is your Self: calm, curious, and compassionate.

I offer IFS online to Miami adults who want to stop fighting themselves and start understanding what's happening inside. As an IFS-trained therapist, I help you build a relationship with your parts rather than trying to silence them.

Parts shaped by more than one culture

The sun setting over the sea in Florida

For many people in Miami, the inner world reflects more than one language, culture, or set of family expectations. You might have a part that honors the traditions you were raised with and another that wants to live differently. A part might speak up loudly at family gatherings while another goes quiet. IFS offers a respectful way to hold all of these without forcing you to pick a side.

Rather than labeling one part as right and another as wrong, we get curious about what each one is protecting and what it needs. Often, a part that seems rigid is carrying a heavy responsibility it took on very young. When that part feels seen, there's room for something new. Online sessions let you explore this privately, from wherever in South Florida you feel most at ease.

Therapy for Miami residents, from home

Life in Miami moves fast and often loud. Between Palmetto traffic, long hours in Brickell or Doral, and families that gather often and care deeply, carving out a private hour for yourself can feel almost impossible. Online therapy gives you that hour without the commute or the parking garage.

Many Miami households hold more than one language, more than one generation, and more than one set of expectations under the same roof. Sometimes the hardest part of starting therapy is finding a moment when no one will hear you. You might take your session from your car, from a friend's apartment, or from the office after everyone leaves. We will work with what is real for you.

I'm a licensed Florida counselor and Certified EMDR therapist, and I meet with Miami adults who are ready to go deeper than coping tips and want care that understands how the past lives in the body.

Does this sound like you?

  • "I've tried therapy before, but I still feel stuck in the same patterns."
  • "No matter what I do, I can't seem to quiet my inner critic or ease my anxiety."
  • "I feel torn between two parts of me. One wants change, but the other keeps holding me back."
  • "I understand my problems logically, but I can't seem to break free emotionally."
  • "Traditional talk therapy hasn't helped me get to the root of my pain."
  • "I'm ready for a new, deeper approach to healing, one that truly works."

If any of these feel familiar, you're in the right place.

Change is possible, and it starts with understanding and compassion for every part of you.

How does IFS therapy work?

IFS therapy involves identifying and connecting with the various parts of your internal system. These parts may include:

01

Managers

Parts that try to keep you in control of your environment, often working hard to prevent emotional overwhelm. Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and over-planning are common manager strategies.

02

Firefighters

Parts that react impulsively or intensely to put out emotional pain once it surfaces, through things like numbing, distraction, bingeing, or rage.

03

Exiles

Parts that hold painful memories or emotions, often from childhood or trauma, that have been "buried" in an effort to protect you from pain.

04

Self

The core of who you are: compassionate, calm, and capable of healing and guiding your inner parts. Everyone has Self, even when it feels hidden.

Through a safe, compassionate process, IFS helps you access Self, heal your wounded parts, and restore balance in your internal system. The work emphasizes curiosity, understanding, and compassion toward every part, including the ones you'd rather get rid of.

Why I combine IFS with EMDR

Becky Romero, LMHC, LPC, at her desk

My training in IFS (Level One), Ego State Therapy, and EMDR and Parts Work for Complex Trauma lets me blend these approaches. IFS helps us understand and befriend the protective parts that might otherwise block trauma processing. EMDR then helps the parts carrying old pain release it.

For many of my clients, this combination is what finally creates movement after years of feeling stuck. We'll go at the pace your system allows, and your protectors always get a say.

FAQ

IFS Therapy in Miami: common questions

Have a question that isn't answered here? I'm happy to talk it through in a free consultation.

It can be, with a little planning. Some clients use headphones and sit in their car, others schedule sessions while family members are at work or school, and some place a white noise machine outside the door. I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, and what you share stays between us. If privacy at home truly isn't possible right now, we can talk through options during your free consultation.

No. All of my work is online, so there is no Miami office to visit. What I can offer is consistency: you can keep your sessions whether you are at home in Kendall, at a relative's place in Hialeah, or working late downtown, as long as you are physically in Florida at the time. If you travel outside Florida or Colorado, we would pause until you return.

I'm a private pay therapist. Sessions are $200 for 60 minutes, and I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. Some plans include out-of-network mental health benefits people have never used, so it's worth calling your insurer and asking before we start.

I'll guide you to explore your internal parts in a safe and supportive environment. You'll connect with these parts, understand their roles, and help them heal by accessing your compassionate, wise Self.

IFS can be helpful if you're struggling with emotional regulation or unprocessed trauma, feeling stuck in repetitive patterns, interested in a deep and transformative approach, or wanting more self-compassion and inner peace. It works for anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, and self-worth challenges.

Traditional therapy often focuses on external circumstances or behaviors. IFS explores your inner world and works directly with the parts of you that feel stuck, protective, or wounded, which allows for deeper emotional healing.

IFS is effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, relationship struggles, and more. It's also helpful if you feel stuck in repeating patterns or want a deeper understanding of yourself.

Not at all. I'll guide you through identifying and understanding your parts in a supportive, compassionate way. All you need is an open mind and a willingness to explore.
